General Information for People with Inherited CDK4 Mutations

Both men and women can carry a mutation in the CDK4 gene. Mutations in CDK4 cause Melanoma Cancer Syndrome.

People with an in CDK4 have increased risk for certain cancers. See the Cancer Risk section for more information. There are guidelines for screening and prevention for certain cancers in people with an CDK4 mutation. There also may be clinical trials available for people who test positive for an CDK4 mutation. See our Risk Management section for more information about screening options in people with CDK4 mutations.

People diagnosed with a CDK4 mutation who have been diagnosed with cancer may qualify for specific treatment or clinical trials. Visit the Cancer Treatment section for more information about clinical trials for people with a CDK4 mutation.

The name CDK4 stands for "Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 4." The gene provides instructions for making several tumor suppressor proteins. The CDK4 gene is located on chromosome 12.
